INSPIRATION AND GOALS
During my time as a nurse, I have cared for many patients whose management of their chronic diseases and access to primary care was poor and limited. I would see many of these patients when they would go to the emergency department to refill their prescriptions for their chronic diseases and to manage their disease processes that had gotten beyond their control. It became very disheartening to see a patient in an acute hypertensive crisis because their prescription had run out or a patient whose lack of knowledge of their inhalers, predisposing factors, and poor management of their COPD had led to them getting intubated while they were in acute respiratory failure. I feel I have spent a great deal of my time and energy focusing on repairing what has already been broken.
This is where I drew my inspiration from, when in 2016, I applied to graduate school with a concentration in family medicine. I wanted to expand the depth and breadth of my nursing education and scope of practice, working as an APRN in my community by educating and empowering people to take control over their acute and chronic disease processes. I am inspired every day to go to work with the hope of being able to enrich the lives of the members of my community.
